BIO (Theater Version)

Ian Ng is a New York City - based composer.   His music has been described by The New York Times as "invigorating" with "intricate rhythms", and by The Financial Times as having "a solid rhythmic grounding". The South China Morning Post has observed that Mr. Ng's "attractive contrapuntal features are begging to be heard again".  He graduated from New York University with a Master Degree in Music Composition on a full scholarship.


He won the American Prize, ASCAP Morton Gould Young Composer Award, and Robert Avalon International Music Composition Competition for his Grand Jeté on a Violin, which had its US premiere as a dance piece choreographed by Marcelo Gomes, principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre, in April 2012 at the David H. Koch Theatre at Lincoln Center.  It has subsequently been performed at the New York City Center, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, North Carolina School for the Arts, Vail International Dance Festival, and at theaters in Los Angeles, Indianapolis, San Francisco, Idaho, Alabama, Mexico, Japan, Canada, Brazil and Israel. The ballet is featured in the Juilliard Open Studios interactive app, which is available for download in the iTunes Store. The music is also included in American Ballet Theatre principal dancer Misty Copeland's feature documentary A Ballerina's Tale, which had its premiere at the TriBeCa Film Festival in Spring 2015. 


Sponsored by the Rockefeller Brothers Fund, Igual, his second collaboration with Marcelo Gomes, debuted at the 20th Anniversary of the Fire Island Dance Festival in July 2014, featuring dancers from Complexions Contemporary Ballet, and was also performed at the Joyce Theater during that company’s Fall 2014 season. His latest ballet, performed by the American Ballet Theatre JKO School, The Idea of Becoming , had its premiere last Spring in New York City.  


Other original collaborations include a ballet by David Fernandez based on Mr. Ng's A Constant Fretful Stamping of Hooves, performed at the Florence Gould Hall at Alliance Française, a contemporary piece Reflection by Po Lam for the City Contemporary Dance Company and Seeing with Fresh Eyes by Brenton Surgenor. Mr. Ng has also conceived, composed and co-directed two theatre pieces: Pas d'Electronique and Bang .  


In the Spring of 2017, he will be presenting his first opera with the support of Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, NYC Department of Cultural Affairs and New York State Council on the Arts.
